European Peace Facility: Ensuring Air Defence Modernisation of the Republic of Moldova
On 13 June the Council of the European Union adopted a new assistance measure under the European Peace Facility (EPF), pledging EUR 9 million to support the Armed Forces of the Republic of Moldova in the comprehensive modernisation of the nation’s defence infrastructure. In this context, the Estonian Centre for Defence Investments (ECDI), as the EU’s implementing partner for this EPF assistance measure, will assist the Armed Forces of the Republic of Moldova in the procurement of short-range air defence launchers and missile systems.
“As the implementing partner, the Estonian Centre for Defence Investments brings broad experience in defence equipment procurement, delivering the necessary materials swiftly and considering not only the initial purchase, but also the future lifecycle and sustainable use of the equipment,” said Katri Raudsepp, Deputy Director General of ECDI.
Since 2021, the European Union has allocated 137 million euros to support the Armed Forces of the Republic of Moldova through the EPF. Thanks to this support, the Armed Forces of the Republic of Moldova will receive relevant equipment to modernise their defence and cyber capabilities.
The EPF was established in March 2021 to fund European Union Common Foreign and Security Policy activities with military and defence implication aimed at preventing conflicts, maintaining peace, and strengthening international security and stability. Through the EPF, the EU has the possibility to provide military equipment to increase its partners’ security and defence capacity.
